Hey everyone, I’m Kayla!
I am a freshman at Reinhardt this semester and my intended
major is Criminology. I graduated with Honors from Creekview High School in
Canton, Georgia, and was a member of my high school’s Advanced Women’s Chorus,
Beta Club, and National Honors Society. I participated in theater groups, as
well. I performed in my school’s productions of “Grease,” “Oklahoma!” and “Story
Theatre.” I also choreographed their production of “The Little Mermaid.”
I first became interested in the subject of Criminology the
summer before my sophomore year in high school. I was on a youth retreat with
my church in Pennsylvania, and on one of our breaks, my best friend introduced
me to the popular television series, Criminal Minds. The show follows the lives
of a team in the Behavioral Analysis Unit under the FBI. The team studies the
criminal’s behavior and uses it to profile the criminal in order to apprehend
him/her. I watched this show with intriguing allure as the suspense built up as
the team got closer and closer to catching the criminal. Since that time, I
have always been fascinated with the way criminals think and behave. I always
wonder what may have caused a seemingly calm person to think and behave so
violently; and if the Nature versus Nurture argument comes into play in
determining the specific actions of the criminal.
I began enrolling in Psychology classes at high school, and
with every class, I grew more interested in the way people think and behave. By
adding in how criminals think and
behave, I was able to come up with studying something interesting and
suspenseful at the same time. And that is pretty much how I became convinced to
major in Criminology.
My long term goals for my major in Criminology is, yes, to
work in the FBI just like the team from Criminal Minds. I desire to work for
the Behavioral Analysis Unit as a special agent or a field agent. I know it may
seem pretty far-fetched, but I am determined to apply and give it my all!
Other than my love for Criminology, I also have a passion
for dance. I have been dancing since I was five years old, and have studied
pretty much all the styles. I have taken classes in ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop,
modern/contemporary, lyrical, musical theater, pointe, and ballroom. My
favorite style of dance is modern, but jazz and tap come in a close second. This
will be my thirteenth year of dance, and my first year competing. I will be on
my studio’s Senior Competition team and am planning to participate at
competitions second semester. I am also currently enrolled in my studio’s Adult
Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, Advanced Jazz, Pointe, and Tap III class.
For my Senior Project last year, I chose to do something
with dance. My dance instructor and the owner of the studio helped me decide on
a fitting project, and I ended up student- and assistant-teaching pre-ballet,
jazz, hip-hop, and tumbling. I also choreographed my hip-hop class’s recital
dance. It was a huge learning experience for me, and it opened my eyes into the
life of a choreographer and dance instructor.
Other than that, I really don’t know what else to say. I
love food. I eat everything and all the time. My favorite color is purple and I
have a dog named Tyco and a cat named Sparkles. I love my converse shoes and my
laptop is my life. The Hunger Games is my favorite book series and my favorite
bands are Mayday Parade and Panic! at the Disco. I play acoustic guitar, and I have been since 9th grade. I love my friends from high school, and most of them have all gone off to different places for college. I already miss them!
I’m really excited for this class, and I hope this semester
goes well!
